  • AID IS STILL NEEDED FOR HURRICANE RECOVERY

    September 29, 2008

Thank you to the MFR supporters who have already made donations to help people in the Gulf Coast and Haiti as they recover from Hurricanes Ike, Gustav and other Atlantic storms. Your donations thus far have helped Direct Relief International send emergency medical and aid and basic personal care products for those living in shelters.
If you've already donated to MFR for hurricane recovery in the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast please help spread the word that AID IS STILL NEEDED. In Haiti, nearly a month after the most severe flooding, hundreds of thousands of people are homeless and in dire need of food and shelter, while millions of cubic yards of mud still needs to be cleared before rebuilding can take place. In Texas and Louisiana, recovery and rebuilding of the affected area will take months. Please click here to donate.

    TIPS TO BE GREEN

We know you've heard most or all of these before, but it never hurts to be reminded. These are all simple measures that you can take to make a difference.

1 Encourage a friend to make positive changes in their life to live greener and reduce their carbon footprint.
2 When shopping, purchase products with little or no packaging.
3 Cool the globe, plant a tree. click here for a how-to.
4 Adjust your thermostat 2˚ lower in winter and 2˚ higher in summer to save energy and lower your bills.
5 Eating leftovers rather than throwing them away will prevent them from going into a landfill and producing methane.
6 Hang your clothes to air-dry rather than using a dryer to save energy.
7 Rather than throwing away your old clothes and electrical appliances, donate them to somebody who might need them.
8 Wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl of water rather than letting the tap run, then use the remaining water to water your plants.
9 Wash your clothes in cold water, only do laundry when you have a full load to save water and energy.
10 When planning your next vacation: take a bus or train instead of plane.
11 Ride your bike or walk on as many short-distance trips as possible.
12 Turn off the air conditioning while driving your car (roll down the windows) to help you save gas and reduce carbon emissions. Do not preheat the car when it’s cold, just start driving.
13 Use a canvas bag for your grocery shopping rather than paper or plastic bags.
14 Start your own kitchen garden by planting herbs in reused pots or jars. The plants will reduce carbon emissions and reusing the container means less waste.
15 When leaving a room turn off the lights and shut down electrical appliances when you don’t need them.
16 Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. A running tap will waste over 1 ½ gallons of water per minute.

Our Mission To respond to natural disasters as they occur to help victims recover and rebuild, with an emphasis on housing, education programs and resources. MUSIC FOR RELIEF also recognizes the environmental consequences of global warming, which has demonstrated the capability to accelerate and strengthen certain types of natural disasters. Therefore the second goal of MUSIC FOR RELIEF is to prevent and decrease future natural disasters by reducing greenhouse gasses, seeking renewable forms of energy and educating the public about climate change.

Background Established in 2005 to provide aid for those affected by the tsunami tragedy in South Asia, the idea for MUSIC FOR RELIEF originated amongst the members of the band Linkin Park who wanted to do something to help the victims. The idea was that if they made a donation, and then asked their musician peers and their fans to make a donation as well, a huge impact could be made in assisting relief efforts. With this in mind they started reaching out to others in the music community to get involved and became the founders of MUSIC FOR RELIEF.
